NEW ORDER OF SUPREME COURT FOR CAR OWNERS: STICKER MANDATORY TO INDICATE FUEL TYPE

A new order has been given by Supreme Court for cars and SUV owners. Now it is mandatory for the vehicle owners to stick a hologram or stickers of various colours to indicate the fuel type of the vehicle.

The rule is applicable on both private and commercial vehicle owners. The order has been issued by the bench of Supreme Court judges comprising Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta. This has been given after consulting Additional Solicitor General (ASG) ANS Nadakarni. In India, most commercial vehicles run of diesel, so the order will affect cars, SUVs, Electric and hybrid vehicles most in India. CNG commercial vehicles will also need a new hologram.

In August too, Ministry of road transport has given the proposal the light blue hologram will be used for cars running on petrol and CNG. It suggested an orange colour sticker for diesel vehicles. This had to be come to play from October 2 but it has not been started yet. This was discussed in the Court during the hearing case of air pollution matter, Advocate Aparajita Singh, assisting as amicus curiae of the court and said that MoRTH must inform about the implementation.

It was confirmed by ASG that the notification regarding the stickers have been issued and implementation will be done soon. The bench has further asked the bench to file an affidavit within 2 weeks. The Toyota Kirloskar has also approached the bench of the court that it is not fair to put hybrid vehicles in the same basket with petrol and diesel vehicles since they create a negligible pollution of air. It said that hybrid should be out of colour coded system. The government has to decide on this matter

The Supreme Court has asked the Ministry of Road Transport to issue advertisements in this issue. It has to tell how to and where this holograms need to be placed. The Car owners have to collect the stickers from district transport office after showing the certificate of registration of the vehicle. There are reports that the date of registration will also be printed on the colour coded holograms and stickers. The advertisements in this regard will be published in newspapers shortly.
